What I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse Is About
On the run from the police, Aden takes refuge in the desert and meets Marvel, a man with a strange bond to the earth and its creatures. Aden eventually talks him into leaving, and the two head for another desert, the big city, which turns out to be the opposite of everything Marvel’s world was. Fernando Arrabal directed, and the film belongs to the Panic movement he founded with Alejandro Jodorowsky and Roland Topor. The narrative does not run in a straight line, images connect by association rather than logic, and the sacred and the repulsive are deliberately set side by side throughout, which is why it met heavy resistance when it came out. Emmanuelle Riva takes one of the leads. It is one of those films that uses surrealism as provocation rather than as a style.
