What If I Were You Is About
Madelyn learns that her husband is involved with a much younger woman. Tracking the woman down, she arrives just as she is attempting suicide, and out of that night comes an unlikely bond: each agrees to hand the decisions about her own life over to the other. The pact carries both of them somewhere neither expected, and Madelyn ends up playing King Lear in an amateur production with the younger woman as the Fool. Joan Carr-Wiggin, who wrote and directed, turns a story of betrayal into a strange partnership rather than a contest. It works to the degree that Marcia Gay Harden and Leonor Watling can hold comedy and hurt in the same scene. Shakespeare is not decoration here: a middle-aged woman taking a man's part speaks directly to what the film is about.
