A car engineer who has had enough of his job and a professor’s daughter take work in a gangster’s mansion as a married pair of servants, he as butler and she as cook. As the lie grows the thing turns into comedy, and the gangster’s house becomes the stage both for class difference and for false identity. William A. Seiter directed for Columbia, with Herbert Marshall and Jean Arthur in the leads. What the film is most remembered for now came afterwards: in 1937 Frank Capra found it being sold in London as A Frank Capra Production. He had never seen it. Harry Cohn, who ran Columbia, had used his name without permission, and Capra sued the studio; the dispute ran a year and was settled by a deal that gave Capra the rights to You Can’t Take It With You.
