In a Whisper

Leyla Bouzid's 2026 film follows Lilia, back in Tunisia for her uncle's funeral. Her family knows nothing about her life in Paris, least of all about her relationship. Lilia begins looking into the uncertainty around the death. As the questions go on, what the family has kept hidden opens up; the narrative sets two secrets side by side and shows how the unspoken passes down a generation. Hiam Abbass appears. The tone is calm and the conflict is not conducted loudly. The film moves between French and Arabic. Who it's for: viewers of North African cinema and narratives of family secrets. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a quick resolution; the film opens its questions slowly.
