In My Blood It Runs

Maya Newell's 2019 Australian documentary follows Dujuan, ten years old, in Alice Springs. He speaks his own language, is raised with traditional knowledge and is counted a failure at school. The argument is that the two do not fit. The curriculum does not recognise what Dujuan knows; the narrative sets the risk of the boy being taken into custody beside his family's efforts to prevent it. The filming was done with the consent of family and community, and the documentary states that arrangement openly. Dujuan narrates in his own voice. Who it's for: those interested in education and Indigenous rights. Who it's not for: viewers who want to hear the case for the state and the schools; the documentary stands with the family.
