In the Land of Brothers

This 2024 film by Raha Amirfazli and Alireza Ghasemi follows an Afghan family who have taken refuge in Iran across three separate periods. Each part centres on a different member, with years between them. The argument is that the temporary becomes permanent. The family believes each time that it has settled; residence permits, work and schooling begin again in every generation and no one is fully accepted. Most of the performers are non-professional and from the Afghan community. The narrative builds no large events; the tension comes from official procedures, relations with neighbours and quiet humiliations. The film drew notice at festival screenings. Who it's for: those who follow drama about migration and refuge. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a story that resolves; the film leaves all three parts unclosed.
