What In the Night Is About

A man working in a quarry marries and builds a happy life. One day there is an explosion at his workplace and his face is left unrecognisable. What follows is everything changing inside the same house. The film tells the injury not as a scene of catastrophe but through the daily life that comes after it. Whether his wife’s way of looking at him has changed is the question at the centre. The relation the man forms with his own face is part of the story too. It is a black and white work from the last years of silent cinema. Charles Vanel both directs and takes the lead. The seventy five minute French film was completed in 1930.
