What Interview Is About

Pierre, a political correspondent, is handed an ordinary assignment: he is to interview a famous television actress. Pierre looks down on the job and Katja, the actress, does not take him seriously either. The meeting starts badly and nearly breaks up. Then the two of them are left alone in her flat and the conversation changes direction; each says more than they meant to. Theo van Gogh's Dutch film takes place almost in one room with two actors; Katja Schuurman plays a part close to herself. Van Gogh was killed in Amsterdam in 2004; this was among his last works. Steve Buscemi remade the same script in America in 2007. The tension comes entirely out of the talk, out of who is using whom.
