Invisible Target

An action film set in Hong Kong. There is a robbery of an armoured van. A woman is killed in the explosion and her fiancé, a sergeant, becomes someone else from that day. Three policemen are after the same crew. Chan wants revenge; Fong follows the rules and works by the book; Wai is looking for his missing brother. The crew works like mercenaries. Five men, militarily trained, moving openly in the city. From there the film is a pursuit. A tea house, a police station, an apartment block and a warehouse. What the narrative is interested in is not crime but rules: the three policemen's methods conflict, and the film takes a long time to decide who is right. The raid on the station is its best constructed section. The crew attacks a police building and the narrative holds it long, in one location. The fights are heavy and physical. In keeping with the Hong Kong action tradition the use of doubles was kept limited and the falls were shot from real height. The leader of the crew is not an ordinary villain. His reason is given in the film and rests on a betrayal. Nicholas Tse, Shawn Yue, Jaycee Chan and Wu Jing are in the cast. Benny Chan directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes Hong Kong action built on real stunt work. Who it is not for: anyone looking for plot; the narrative is thin, the characters are types, and the film exists mainly for the fights.
