What It Happened in Europe Is About
A band of children left orphaned or on the run by the war moves across the countryside looking for food and shelter, stealing, cheating and looting as they go. They break into what they take to be an abandoned castle and find that a former conductor, Simon Peter, has withdrawn from the world and is living there. After the first confrontation the gang accepts his guidance, and his protecting them earns their respect. Geza von Radvanyi wrote the film with Bela Balazs, shot it in 1947, released it on 1 January 1948 and took second prize at Locarno that year. The story took its inspiration from Gabor Sztehlo, the pastor who saved thousands of children during and after the war and founded the children’s republic called Gaudiopolis. Artur Somlay plays Simon Peter.
