What Jack Is About

Ten-year-old Jack has to look after his six-year-old brother Manuel from the moment they get up until they go to bed. Their mother loves them and does not mother them; she is out at night and the household falls to Jack. When Manuel has an accident the arrangement collapses, and the two boys start searching the streets of Berlin for her. They tell nobody, because they know that telling anyone means being separated. Edward Berger's German film screened in competition at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014, with Ivo Pietzcker as Jack. It is filmed at the boy's height: adults are usually outside the frame, and help does not arrive from anywhere.
