What Jeca Tatu Is About
Jeca is a smallholder whose land is being squeezed out from under him by a neighbouring landowner’s greed. The foreman’s scheming, and his daughter’s romance with that landowner’s son, tighten the trap, until a city politician’s backing lets him recover the property and expose the man behind it. The character is Monteiro Lobato’s, but the film comes less from the fiction than from the health pamphlet Lobato adapted for a pharmaceutical laboratory and which was distributed in some eighty million copies, where he argued that Jeca was not lazy but worn down by hookworm. Mazzaropi’s version sold close to eight million tickets.
