Kalakalappu

Sundar C's 2012 Tamil film follows a man trying to save his family restaurant from ruin. The business is losing money, a health inspector is determined to close it and he falls in love with her. His brother's arrival complicates matters further. The humour is built on misunderstandings and confusions of identity. The cast is large, the pace high and the scenes short; Sundar C made many films in this shape and follows the template here. Santhanam appears in support and carries most of the comic weight. The narrative is not original and combines situations familiar from several sources. The songs break the narrative and connect weakly to the plot. Who it's for: those who like Tamil situation comedy. Who it's not for: viewers looking for subtle humour; the film is built on broad jokes and physical comedy.
