Kalamkaval

The early 2010s. A routine inquiry begins in a quiet village called Kottayikonam. Someone is missing. The policeman Sethumadhavan takes the file; an old officer, patient and in no hurry. The questions start simply. Then another disappearance comes up, then another. What they have in common is a name: a courteous, helpful man everyone in the village knows. There is no evidence. No bodies are found. Sethumadhavan starts talking to him, and the man across from him never goes on the defensive. Jithin K Jose directs; he wrote the screenplay with Jishnu Sreekumar and it is his first film. Mammootty, Vinayakan, Rajisha Vijayan and Shruti Ramachandran are in the cast. The language is Malayalam, with about forty per cent of the dialogue in Tamil. The film opened on 5 December 2025; it runs a hundred and forty four minutes and was produced by Mammootty's company. It became the fifth highest grossing Malayalam production of 2025. Its ground is a real case; a series of killings by cyanide in India is the starting point. The narrative does not hide the killer; the tension comes not from who did it but from how it can be proved. The character Vinayakan plays is calm and ordinary; the film does not build him as a monster and that choice is its most uncomfortable side. The narrative takes the village's silence as a subject too; nobody suspects because nobody looks. The photography is cold and the violence stays outside the frame. Its limit is pace; the narrative is slow, there is little event, and the ending explanatory. Who it is for: viewers who like Malayalam thrillers and narratives drawn from real case files. Who it is not for: it is slow, dark, and the ending cold.
