The last days of the Warsaw Uprising, September 1944. A defeated company goes down into the sewers under the city, trying to reach the centre. In the opening the narrator tells us to watch these people carefully, because these are the final hours of their lives. Wajda builds the tension not despite that information but out of it. Below there is darkness, filth, narrow openings, sealed exits and wrong turnings; the group splits into three and each finds its own ending. The middle part of Wajda's war trilogy.
