What Kaza-hana Is About
Shinji Sōmai’s 2001 film turned out to be his last; he died shortly afterwards of lung cancer at fifty-three. Tadanobu Asano plays a self-satisfied bureaucrat and Kyoko Koizumi a young mother forced into work at a hostess club after her husband’s death. The two meet more or less by accident and set off together, and the journey promises neither redemption nor punishment, only a stretch of time in which two damaged people can stand next to each other. Sōmai knew what to do with landscape and distance: the camera hangs back, holds the shot, and leaves the judgement to whoever is watching. Kumiko Aso and Fumiyo Kohinata are also in the cast.
