What Kids Is About

Asato comes back to his old neighbourhood to be near his mother, who is in prison. The area is a poor one that people just call the Street. Asato has an odd gift: he can take another person’s injury onto himself. He cannot walk past a child with a grazed knee or a broken arm, so he is constantly hurt. On the street he is protected from the local thugs by Takeo, whose own trouble is his father, lying in a coma in hospital. The third of them is Shiho, a young waitress with something of her own that she keeps back. The film treats the fantastic element not as a superpower but as a weight somebody has to carry. Teppei Koike, Hiroshi Tamaki and Chiaki Kuriyama appear in Tatsuya Ogishima’s hundred and nine minute Japanese film, completed in 2008.
