What King Thrushbeard Is About
An East German children's film adapted from the Brothers Grimm. Princess Anna is beautiful and thoroughly haughty, mocking each of her suitors in turn, and in the end her father marries her to a beggar. Poverty, work and love change her. The logic of the tale itself is uncomfortable from here: a woman is disciplined through humiliation and the film offers this as a lesson. Walter Beck's treatment is not coarse for all that, with careful sets and costumes, gentle humour and Manfred Krug carrying the whole thing as the beggar. It runs seventy four minutes and speaks directly to a young audience.
