What Kissing Jessica Stein Is About
A woman in New York, worn out by dating, answers a personal ad and finds a woman on the other end. The film treats this less as a story of discovery than as a problem of fit: what matters as much as who you want is what you tell your family and what you tell yourself. The dialogue is fast and audibly derived from its writers' own play. The protagonist is genuinely irritating at times and the film does not excuse her. Its ending was much argued over on release and still is.
