Klaus

Sergio Pablos’s 2019 animation runs 97 minutes and is, in his own description, a Santa Claus origin story told from the viewpoint of a postal worker who arrives in a troubled village that does not use mail. Made in Madrid at Pablos’s own SPA Studios with Atresmedia Cine, it is the first film he directed after originating Despicable Me. How light should sit on drawn frames was solved inside the building: concept artist Marcin Jakubowski found the method, and Les Films du Poisson Rouge worked out how to derive tracking from drawn lines, bitmap ones rather than vectors. The resulting tool runs in real time and lets up to eight layers, among them ambient occlusion, subsurface scattering, rim light and bounce light, be laid over a single frame. Pablos says he was reaching out across continents while the man with the answer sat next door. He also set himself a rule: never write dialogue carrying information that subtle physical acting could deliver. The film was nominated for Animated Feature Film at the Academy Awards, where Toy Story 4 won, took the BAFTA for animation and collected seven Annie Awards. A good fit if you will let a glance rather than a line carry the plot. Not for anyone expecting magic shown outright; this legend begins as a selfish calculation.
