What Kotch Is About
Joseph Kotcher, a retired salesman, starts to feel he is in the way in his son's house. Rather than agree to a retirement home, he takes to the road. He runs into Erica, his grandson's former babysitter, who is pregnant, alone and has no idea what she is going to do. The old man and the young woman set up together, and each turns out to be useful to the other in ways neither expected. Jack Lemmon directed it, the only film he ever directed. Walter Matthau plays the lead and was nominated for an Academy Award for it. It is a 1971 film nobody talks about much, funny and bruising in equal measure about growing old.
