Krrish

An Indian superhero film continuing from an earlier one. Rohit had met an alien and been given a power. Years after that film he disappears. His son Krishna grows up in the mountains. His grandmother keeps him away from the city because the boy carries his father's abilities: he runs very fast, jumps very high, and has an extraordinary sense. The grandmother asks one thing. He will show nobody. At a camp he meets Priya. She works in television in Singapore and has to go back. Krishna follows her. From there the film is a story about hiding. He has to conceal what he can do in the city, and during a circus fire he cannot hold back and saves the children; he puts on a mask to hide his face. At the same time he finds his father's trail. The laboratory Rohit worked in is still operating and there is a computer there that can see the future. What the narrative is interested in is not power but inheritance: the film sets Krishna's choice beside his father's, and the same decision is made twice. Hrithik Roshan plays both the father and the son. The action was prepared with a team from Hong Kong; the wire work and fight choreography come from that tradition, and it was new at that scale in Indian cinema. Most of it was shot in Singapore. The film did very large business in India and opened the way for the superhero narrative in the country. The music is by Rajesh Roshan. Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Rekha, Naseeruddin Shah and Manoj Joshi are in the cast. Rakesh Roshan directed. Who it is for: anyone interested in Indian action cinema and experiments with genre. Who it is not for: anyone looking for something short; it runs close to three hours and the first hour is entirely romantic comedy.
