Kumail Nanjiani: Night Thoughts

Kumail Nanjiani's 2025 stand-up special records his return to the stage after nearly a decade. It was shot in Chicago, where he began his career, and that choice is part of the show. Anxiety is at the centre. Nanjiani describes waking at night and being unable to stop thinking, and moves from there to attempts at buying drugs before legalisation and to his cat's medication schedule. The subjects do not appear connected but rest on the same underlying feeling. His manner is calm and observational; there is no shouting and the pace is low. Bill Benz's direction is a standard recording, with the camera watching the stage. As a set made after a ten-year gap, the personal sections carry the weight. Who it's for: those who like observational stand-up. Who it's not for: viewers looking for high-energy, provocative comedy; the show is calm and inward.
