Thirteen year old Tom, who has lost his father, cannot pull himself together; when things go wrong at school and at home he is sent, as a punishment, to work alongside a national park ranger in the Yorkshire Dales. The two repair paths, build stiles and walk the fells; in time the boy starts saying beside this man what he can say to nobody else. The distance between mother and son slowly closes as well. The film uses the landscape of the Dales not as decoration but as a place that carries what the boy holds inside. Dan Hartley’s ninety six minute British film came out of the director’s own childhood; most of the cast, including the leads Bretten Lord and Alan Gibson, had never acted before.
