What Laugh or Die Is About
Heikki Kujanpää's 2018 Finnish film starts from real events. In 1918, after the civil war has ended, a troupe of actors is shut inside an island prison camp on charges tied to the Red side and is waiting to be executed. With a visit from a German general approaching, the camp administration puts an offer on the table: stage a comedy, make the guest laugh, and they get a new trial. Building a comedy in the middle of hunger and death, with half the troupe made up of stagehands, is close to impossible. Martti Suosalo plays Parikka, once called the funniest man in Finland. Dark humour and a postwar reckoning share the same stage.
