What Le Franc Is About

Marigo is a musician. He has no money. He cannot pay his rent. His landlady takes his instrument, a congoma, and keeps it. He wants it back. He buys a lottery ticket. He needs somewhere safe to keep it. He glues it to the back of his door and waits for the draw. The ticket wins. The trouble is that it is stuck fast to the door, and the door has to come off with it. Behind the film is a currency decision. The West African CFA franc lost half its value in 1994, and the story takes that as an everyday matter rather than a headline. Dieye Ma Dieye and Aminata Fall appear in the forty six minute film. Djibril Diop Mambéty planned it as part of a trilogy, and the third film was never made.
