What Little Mountain Boy Is About
Ursli is a boy in a mountain village in Switzerland’s Lower Engadine. His family’s finances are collapsing, his beloved goat needs rescuing, and a spoiled bully keeps getting in his way. What he actually needs is the big bell required for Chalandamarz; given a small one instead, he decides to climb the mountain in deep winter to fetch a family heirloom. Xavier Koller adapted the film from the 1945 picture book by Selina Chönz and Alois Carigiet, read by generations of Swiss children. It was shot in the real village and in real winter. Chalandamarz is an Engadine tradition that rings in the arrival of spring with bells.
