Jerry Wasserman What Little Pink House Is About
Susette Kelo, a paramedic in New London, Connecticut, buys a small house looking out on the water and paints it pink. Not long after, the city decides to open that neighbourhood to a pharmaceutical company's development and moves to take the houses by eminent domain. Kelo refuses to move. The case she brings with her neighbours goes all the way to the United States Supreme Court. Courtney Balaker's first feature is adapted from Jeff Benedict's book. In 2005 the Court found for the city by five votes to four, and the ruling drew a large reaction across the political spectrum; a number of states then tightened their eminent domain laws. Catherine Keener plays Kelo and Jeanne Tripplehorn the woman running the project. The development planned for the demolished neighbourhood was never built; the land stayed empty.
