What Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man Is About
Ruggero Deodato's 1976 film is considered one of the most extreme entries in the Italian crime cycle. Fred and Tony work in a special unit in Rome; they ignore every rule, operate with licence to kill, and treat danger as a form of entertainment. The film barely stops: it opens on a long motorcycle chase and keeps that pace throughout. Deodato does not criticise the pair's violence but stages it as spectacle, and the nearly inseparable closeness between the two is the most discussed thing about it. For anyone wanting to see how the seventies Italian argument about police powers surfaced in genre film, it is a clear specimen. Aesthetically loose, but high on energy. Who it's for: viewers seeking poliziottesco and the outer limits of the period. Who it's not for: anyone who cannot take violence against women and arbitrary police force presented without question.
