What Long Day's Journey Into Night Is About
Long Day's Journey Into Night, directed by Sidney Lumet, adapts Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical play, whose characters are drawn directly from O'Neill's own family, a morphine addicted mother, an alcoholic older brother, and a consumptive younger son standing in for the writer himself. The film swept the acting prizes at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival: Ralph Richardson, Jason Robards, and Dean Stockwell shared Best Actor, and Katharine Hepburn won Best Actress. Hepburn received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the role but did not win. The film was named to the National Board of Review's top ten films of 1962. Unusually for a period film, shooting was done in sequence, following three weeks of rehearsal. Who it's for: anyone curious about an autobiographical play modeled directly on the writer's own family, adapted into a film that swept the acting prizes at Cannes. Who it's not for: viewers wanting something short and light, since this is a dense, dialogue heavy family drama running over two and a half hours.
