Losmen Bu Broto

Eddie Cahyono's 2021 Indonesian film is set in a small guesthouse in Yogyakarta. Bu Broto and her family run it, and each of the children has plans of their own that cut across the business. The film does not inflate the quarrel. The mother wants to keep the order, the children want to leave; the narrative puts no one in the wrong and carries its arguments at the table, in the corridor and in the kitchen. It is adapted from a television series widely watched in the eighties. Maudy Koesnaedi and Mathias Muchus appear. The images stay largely in one location. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian family drama and single-location narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting incident; the film is built on conversation.
