Lost Land

Akio Fujimoto's 2026 film follows two children setting out from a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. Shafi, four, and Somira, nine, hope to reach the family they were scattered from. The journey runs to Malaysia. The film stays at the children's eye level; smugglers, borders and the long waits are given not through adult explanation but as far as the children can see. The cast are not professionals. The narrative does not lean on large events, and the danger often stays outside the frame. The director had worked in the region before. Who it's for: viewers of migration narratives and realist cinema. Who it's not for: viewers for whom scenes of children in danger would be difficult.
