What Love and Death on Long Island Is About
Giles De'Ath is an elderly widowed writer with a settled contempt for everything modern. He goes to the cinema for an E. M. Forster adaptation, walks into the wrong screen, and finds himself watching a cheap teen comedy. Then Ronnie Bostock appears on the screen and his life reorganises itself around him. He starts collecting everything about the young actor, cutting up magazines, and eventually travels to Long Island to meet him. Richard Kwietniowski adapted Gilbert Adair's novel, which is itself looking straight at Death in Venice. John Hurt is Giles, Jason Priestley is Ronnie. The film holds the obsession exactly between ridiculous and moving.
