What Love + Hate Is About
Dominic Savage’s 2005 film is set in a town in the north of England and follows two young people on opposite sides of its racial divide. Adam has grown up in a white family and a community where racism is ordinary; Naseema is a British Pakistani girl from the same town. Working together in a DIY store, they notice each other and then discover what they actually have in common, which is that both want out of the place. Savage prefers to work with non-professional performers, and the arguments in the film carry a real awkwardness because of it. BBC Films and the UK Film Council produced. It played at the Berlin and London festivals.
