What Love Serenade Is About
A radio man from the city moves to a small town on the Murray River in Australia. He thinks a good deal of himself, says little, and plays records. The two sisters next door fix on him, and a silent competition starts between them. One is a hairdresser, the other works in a restaurant. There seems to be nobody else in the town. Shirley Barrett's first feature won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes in 1996. The film starts like a romantic comedy and goes somewhere steadily more uncomfortable: what the man builds with the sisters, and the emptiness of the town, both turn strange. Miranda Otto and Rebecca Frith play the sisters and George Shevtsov the radio man. The humour is dry from beginning to end.
