Lovely, Still

Robert Malone lives alone. He works at a supermarket, goes home, turns on the television. One evening the woman at his door is Mary, from across the street. Robert starts seeing her, excited and clumsy and boyish, as though this were happening to him for the first time. Mary's daughter and Robert's boss encourage them both. Christmas is coming. But there is something underneath this sweet beginning, and the film keeps it back until the end. Nicholas Fackler directs; ninety-two minutes, with Martin Landau as Robert and Ellen Burstyn as Mary, and Adam Scott and Elizabeth Banks in the cast. Fackler made it at twenty-three. The film is about Alzheimer's, and it chooses not to tell the viewer that at the start.
