Loving Adults

Christian and Leonora look like a faultless couple from outside. Their son has just come through a long illness, the house is finished, the business is going well. At a party at Christian's company, Leonora sees her husband with a young architect. He wants to leave; she decides not to let him. She holds something over him, and she does not hesitate to use it. The film starts as a divorce drama and turns into a measured crime story. It moves back and forth in time, showing the same events from both sides, and what decides matters is not who is right but who is colder. Neither is sympathetic, and the film makes no effort to fix that. Barbara Topsoe-Rothenborg directed. Dar Salim plays Christian and Sonja Richter plays Leonora. The screenplay is by Jacob Weinreich and Anders Ronnow Klarlund, from the novel Kaerlighed for voksne credited to Anna Ekberg. It was Netflix's first Danish original film and went out on 26 August 2022. Who it is for: anyone who likes Nordic crime thrillers and cold narratives run through a marriage. Who it is not for: anyone expecting sustained tension. The pace is flat, the turns are guessable, and the resolution ties up too neatly.
