Lubber Pandhu

In the town they play cricket with a tennis ball and the matches are taken seriously. Gethu has been the best batsman in the area for years. Anbu is young, fast and can beat him. The rivalry starts on the field and does not stay there: Anbu is with Durga, Gethu's daughter. The families come up against each other and the question stops being cricket and becomes who is allowed to marry whom. In the town the answer to that is already written. Both men keep walking out onto the same field. Tamizharasan Pachamuthu wrote and directed; it is his first film. Harish Kalyan, Dinesh, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, Swasika and Kaali Venkat are in the cast. The music is by Sean Roldan. It is an Indian production in Tamil. The film opened on 20 September 2024 and took around forty two and a half crore rupees. The matter it treats is caste; the film sets it inside a sporting rivalry and shows it without sloganeering. Local cricket played with a tennis ball is at the centre and the matches are shot at real scale. The film does not put the two men at opposite poles; each of them is partly right and partly wrong. The women make their own decisions and the narrative does not use them as prizes. The humour is folded into the tension and the tone stays light. The film runs the ageing sportsman's fear of losing his place as a separate line. The ending closes on a match but does not settle the question with one. Its limit is context; some scenes fall flat for anyone who does not know the local cricket culture. Who it is for: viewers who like sports drama and Tamil provincial stories. Who it is not for: it needs local context, the pace is uneven, and the ending is measured.
