What Ludwig - Requiem for a Virgin King Is About
The film takes up Ludwig the Second, king of Bavaria. It is not a historical reconstruction, though; everything happens in openly artificial settings. It was shot on a soundstage with rear projected backdrops. The structure is divided into twenty eight tableaux and the music of Wagner sits inside the account. Syberberg strips nineteenth century German figures and traditions of their mythology. He then reads them again through the eyes of the Germany of 1972. Mockery and lament stand side by side in the same scene. This is the first of Syberberg’s German trilogy, the others following in 1974 and 1977. Harry Baer and Ingrid Caven appear in his hundred and thirty five minute German film, completed in 1972.
