Luna Papa

A village in Central Asia. Mamlakat is seventeen and wants to be an actress. One night an actor from a travelling troupe talks her into it, introducing himself as a friend of Tom Cruise. By morning he is gone and she is pregnant. Her father and her brother, who lost his mind in the war, will not let it go; the three of them set out to find the man. Villages, towns, theatres along the way. The child in her belly narrates, and knows from the start how it ends. Bakhtyar Khudojnazarov directs; a hundred and three minutes, a co-production between Tajikistan, Germany, Russia and Austria. Chulpan Khamatova plays Mamlakat and Moritz Bleibtreu plays her brother Nasreddin. The film does not separate the real from the fabular; a cow falls out of the sky over a Central Asian village and nobody is surprised.
