What Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm Is About
The Kettles leave their thoroughly modern house and go back to the country, meaning to find uranium on their land. But the real tension is not in the mine but inside the house: the mother and her son’s mother in law come up against each other over how the grandchild is to be raised, and the argument grows around an obsession with hygiene. The film works with the moulds of American rural comedy of the fifties, setting city refinement against country practicality and mocking them both. It is one of the films in a series that ran for many years. The comedy of the film comes less from events than from what the characters say back to one another. Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride appear in Edward Sedgwick’s eighty minute American film, completed in 1951.
