Maareesan

Dhayalan is a petty thief. He sees an old man on the street; the man looks lost, what he says does not hold together, and there is money in his pocket. Velayudham Pillai's memory comes and goes. Dhayalan offers to take him home. The aim is plain: he will take the money along the way and disappear. The car sets off. But the old man wants to stop somewhere at every turn and at each stop there is something to be done. Dhayalan waits. Then he sees that the man is not as scattered as he thought and that the journey has a purpose. Sudheesh Sankar directs; V. Krishna Moorthy wrote the screenplay. Fahadh Faasil plays Dhayalan and Vadivelu plays Velayudham Pillai; Kovai Sarala and Sithara are in the cast. The language is Tamil. The film opened on 25 July 2025; it runs a hundred and fifty two minutes and the music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Vadivelu was known for years in comic parts; here he is in a dramatic role at the centre of the narrative. The form is a road film; the events are divided into stops and each stop is a section. The matter it treats is two people misreading each other; both are hiding something. The film starts as comedy and changes kind in the second half. The narrative does not use the memory loss as a source of humour and that line turns serious at the end. Its limit is structure; the turn in the second half does not agree with the first and the pace drops. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil cinema and road films built on two performances. Who it is not for: the tone shifts, it is long, and the ending heavy.
