Madras Matinee

Karthikeyan Mani's 2025 Tamil film follows an ageing science fiction writer who, challenged by his carer, sets out to write the life of an ordinary man. The writer begins reluctantly; as the life of Kannan, an auto rickshaw driver, unfolds, the dramatic density inside ordinariness comes out. The structure has two layers: the writer's room and the story he writes. That construction makes storytelling itself a subject, and the question of which lives are counted worth telling is asked directly. Kaali Venkat's Kannan is unshowy and convincing. Sathyaraj's writer holds the balance. The transitions between the layers do not flow everywhere, and the final section over-explains. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil independent drama and films built on storytelling. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot, or who will find a nested structure distracting.
