Magallanes

Salvador del Solar's 2015 Peruvian film follows Magallanes, a taxi driver in Lima. One day he recognises the woman who gets into his car: Celina, from the years of armed conflict when he served in the army. The question is whose the past is. Magallanes wants to make amends and enters a dangerous plan to raise money; the narrative never stops asking whether this is help or the purchase of his own conscience. Damián Alcázar leads and Magaly Solier plays Celina. The most discussed passage is the scene in which Solier speaks in Quechua and no one understands her; language itself becomes a marker of exclusion. Who it's for: those who follow Latin American political drama. Who it's not for: viewers for whom sexual violence during armed conflict would sit heavily; the film takes it as a direct subject.
