Karlo Sakandelidze What Magdana's Donkey Is About
In Georgia at the turn of the century, the widow Magdana supports her three children by carrying yoghurt to the city market every morning. The children find a sick, abandoned donkey on the road, feed it back to health and name it Lurja after the colour of its eyes. The animal quickly becomes the most useful thing the poor household has. Then a man appears claiming to be its rightful owner, and the matter goes to court. This was the first film by Rezo Chkheidze and Tengiz Abuladze, straight out of film school in Moscow, and it was received as the start of a new wave in Soviet cinema. It was awarded at Cannes in 1956.
