What Mai Mai Miracle Is About
Little Shinko takes her grandfather's stories and imagines the town she lives in as it was a thousand years earlier, seeing a girl of the Heian period who lived on the same ground, the court, the children of that time. Kiiko, newly arrived from the city, joins the imagining. But growing up brings its own reality and the daydream does not cover everything. Sunao Katabuchi tells it in very calm, unshowy animation; the same director would later make In This Corner of the World. It opened in very few cinemas and found its audience over years.
