What MAL·MO·E: The Secret Mission Is About
In Korea under Japanese occupation, Korean is being taken out of the schools, the press and public life. A group from the Korean Language Society sets about compiling the first Korean dictionary so the language will not be lost. Words are gathered in secret from all over the country, dialects sorted, index cards hidden. An illiterate man working as the society's handyman is drawn into the work. Eom Yu-na's South Korean film rests on real events: the dictionary work began in the 1920s and in 1942 members of the society were arrested. The telling does not document the history, moving between popular comedy and drama. Yoo Hai-jin and Yoon Kye-sang take the leads. The subject is not heroism but how a language is kept, word by word.
