What Man in the Chair Is About
Michael Schroeder wrote and directed this account of Cameron, a teenager who wants to enter a student film contest and has neither the money nor the means his rivals do, and of the retired Hollywood gaffer he meets. Flash Madden, played by Christopher Plummer, is the last surviving crew member of Citizen Kane; he now lives in a home for aged film workers and talks like a cantankerous archive. They meet in a dark auditorium and the boy follows him back to where he lives. The film puts the old technicians the industry used and set aside, the people whose names appear far down the credits, at the centre of the story. Michael Angarano plays the boy, with M. Emmet Walsh and Robert Wagner in support. It won the audience award at the 2007 Stony Brook Film Festival and opened on 7 December 2007.
