Mandibles

Quentin Dupieux's film about two idiots who find a giant fly in the boot of a car. Manu and Jean-Gab are two friends who have never done anything right. When a fly the size of a dog turns up in the boot of a car they have stolen, the only idea that occurs to them is to train it and make money. That is the plan; there is no other plan. As usual, Dupieux explains nothing. Nobody asks where the fly came from, nobody is astonished, and the film treats it as an ordinary matter. Its most discussed element is the character played by Adèle Exarchopoulos: a woman who cannot regulate her volume after a skiing accident and shouts every sentence. The scenes built on that one idea are the best in the film. It runs seventy-seven minutes and is Dupieux's sweetest and least cruel film; it is not sneering, it genuinely likes its two fools. A good entry point for anyone who likes absurdity and films that refuse to explain themselves. Deliberately empty for anyone who wants plot or a character who develops.
