What Manic Is About
Lyle is a violent adolescent placed in a juvenile psychiatric unit instead of prison. Inside he finds a group as damaged as he is: beaten, abused, angry, wrestling with who they are. Group therapy and each other become the last thing Lyle has to hold. Jordan Melamed shot it on digital video, handheld and very close; the picture shakes constantly and that is deliberate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt leads and Don Cheadle plays the therapist. Self-harm, child abuse, sexual abuse and suicide are all in it. It is not easy watching and offers no comforting resolution.
